‘Stolen baby’ back home

A BABY girl is back with her mother a year after the Mexico City doctors who delivered her allegedly sold her to another woman.

Authorities yesterday handed the one-year-old to Vanessa Castillo after tests proved she was the child’s mother.

The case led to the arrest on Wednesday of three doctors, a nurse and a receptionist at a hospital in a poor neighbourhood of the capital.

Doctors had refused to let Castillo see the baby, born in October 2008. They first told her the infant had been taken to another hospital, and later that she had died and been cremated.

Ms Castillo learned the truth in an email sent by a man believed to be the son of the hospital’s director.

Prosecutors are investigating whether other newborns were stolen at the hospital.
