Bodies found after UN aid plane crash
04/09/2008 - 13:36:15

A United Nations official says 16 bodies and a black box have been recovered from the wreckage of a humanitarian aid plane that crashed in Congo.

There were 17 people on board the flight that went down on Monday as it was trying to land at an airstrip in the eastern Congo town of Bukavu. Its wreckage was spotted on Tuesday on a ridge 9 miles away.

Heavy fog prevented a rescue helicopter from reaching the site until today. UN spokesman Lt Col Jean-Paul Dietrich says a team of 10 rescuers were lowered down onto the mountain. They found all but one of the 17 bodies.
