European Court finds anti-competitive practices among beef processors
04/09/2008 - 12:28:44

A preliminary ruling by the European Court has found that an agreement involving beef processors here is anti-competitive.

The Advocate General of the court has issued an opinion agreeing with the Competition Authority that the agreement is restrictive.

The judges of the court will now begin their deliberations and are expected to issue a formal judgement in a few months.

The case was referred to the court by the Supreme Court and arises from an agreement involving a group of the country's largest processors.

In 2002 the processors had formed a group which would fund compensation paid to other processors quitting the industry under certain conditions.

However the Competition Authority notified the processors in 2003 that it considered this agreement in breach of EU anti competition legislation.
